Glaciers Galore!

Special edition of Ginny's Globe!! It's all about GLACIERS!

We spent three days in Calafate in Argentina. There we visited a glacier museum! There was an ice bar too! Here we are in the ice bar. The one on the top left is daddy, the one next to him in mommy, below mommy is Baker, below Daddy is me, and below me is Tooty. (Lulu) It was negative 13 degrees Celsius in the ice bar. We got to drink Coca Cola out of an ice cup!

I learned so much about glaciers that I want to teach some things to YOU! Here are three amazing things I learned.

Hielo Azul

Why is the glacier blue you ask? Well when the white light comes in it makes the ice white. But when all the colors of light mix together the blue is stronger than the red and yellow so it makes the hielo azul. If the light goes all the way down to the bottom of the ice it will be very deep blue. If the light stays at the top it will be a light blue. So the color of blue depends on how deep the light goes! Here is a picture I took of the Perito Moreno glacier! See the blue???

Dragon of Patagonia/Andiperla Willinki

Did you know that there is a bug that can survive in a glacier? It is the only animal that can live in a glacier. It is called the Andiperla Willinki. Or if that's to hard to say you can just call it Dragón de la Patagonia or Patagonian Dragon. They live in glaciers in southern Argentina and Chile. They were first discovered in 2019 right before covid. So only recently have tourists been able to go see it for themselves. The hottest they can be in is 10 degrees celsius which is about 50 degrees Fahrenheit. They are almost 2 centimeters. That's like half my thumb!

Growing Glaciers

Have you heard of a glacier growing? There are two big ones that are growing instead of melting. The first one is the Hubbard glacier in Alaska. And then there is one down here in Patagonia called the Pio XI! It grows 18,250 meters in height, length, and density each year. That means every day it grows 50 meters in height, length, and density each day. Scientists think it growing because climate change has made it rain more which makes more snow on the glacier that makes the glacier bigger. But why are other glaciers shrinking even if it snows?

There also are glaciers that are called in balance. That means they are not growing or shrinking! One of those glaciers is called Perito Moreno Glacier and I got to see it and walk beside it! It is bigger than Buenos Aires which is REALLY big! It was surprisingly warm. Here I am in front of the glacier.

We got to see a big chunk of the glacier fall into the water!

I hope you enjoyed this special edition of Ginny's Globe!

Even though it's already June, I was a bat with a paper cup nose.

Hi Ginny! Your postcard arrived today and I was so happy to receive it! Made my day. Yes, we all missed you at the family gathering in July. Can't wait for next year so we can all be together again and hear about your adventures in more detail. Your writing is excellent and I love reading your descriptions. Love and miss you. Munga

BTW, tell Daddy my street is E. Riverpark Ln not E. Riverside. . . the postcard almost didn't make it to me.

Wow, Ginny! I learned so much about glaciers reading this. Thank you for sharing and for making it so clear (or maybe so "blue"). 😉 I love your sense of wonder and your "wonderings." My wondering is when and what does a Patagonian dragon eat?
